Gelim (kilim), a kind of flat-woven rug, is a term used in Persian-speaking parts of West Asia, especially in Iran. Kilims are made by interweaving horizontal woof threads (wool) and vertical warp threads (cotton or wool) on a loom. They are created mostly by women who have an eye for design and color.

The technique dictates that weavers loop colored woof yarns back and forth across the warp, which naturally produces sharp, angular, and geometric motifs. Unlike traditional rugs, they have no pile, making them lightweight, reversible, and versatile.

Traditionally, kilims were made with natural materials such as spun wool and colored using natural, vegetable-based dyes. Designs frequently incorporate symbols representing everyday objects like combs, earrings, or hook alongside native birds, animals, and plants, carrying deep cultural and personal meaning.

They were historically used as floor covering, prayer rugs, wall hangings, tent decorations, and saddlebags. Todays, they remain highly popular in modern interior design for living rooms, hallways, and as rugs, furniture covers, and cushions.

 گلیم نوعی قالی تخت بافت، اصطلاحی است که در مناطق فارسی‌زبان غرب آسیا، به‌ ویژه در ایران، به کار می‌رود. گلیم‌ها با قرارگیری نخ‌های افقی پود (پشم) و نخ‌های عمودی تار (پنبه یا پشم) روی دار بافته می‌شوند. بیشتر توسط زنان که ذوق و سلیقه ای خاص در نقش و رنگ دارند بافته میشوند.

تکنیک بافت ایجاب می‌کند که بافنده نخ‌های پود رنگی را به عقب و جلو روی تارها رد کند که این روش به طور طبیعی نقوشی تیز، زاویه‌دار و هندسی پدید می‌آورد. برخلاف قالی‌های سنتی، گلیم بدون پرز است و همین امر آن را سبک، دوطرفه و چندمنظوره می‌کند. 

گلیم‌ها, بطور سنتی از مواد طبیعی مثل پشم ریسیده شده و با رنگ‌های طبیعی گیاهی رنگرزی می شدند. نقش‌ها اغلب دربردارندهٔ نمادهایی از اشیای روزمره مانند شانه، گوشواره یا قلاب، در کنار پرندگان، جانوران و گیاهان بومی بوده که معانی عمیق فرهنگی و شخصی را با خود حمل می‌نمایند. 

گلیم‌ها در گذشته به عنوان پوشش کف، جانماز، آویز دیواری، تزیین چادر و خورجین استفاده می‌شدند. امروزه نیز در طراحی داخلی مدرن برای نشیمن، راهرو به عنوان زیر انداز و پوشش کف، روکش مبلمان و کوسن همچنان محبوبیت دارند.

و حالا، گلیم به عنوان تاپستری، جلوه ای از رنگ و زیبایی به ارمغان می آورد.
